Single Umbilical Artery

Mark and I wanted to share a prayer request with you. During the ultrasound on Wednesday, Eli was very active. It was sometimes difficult for the nurse to get him still enough to get all the necessary measurements and snapshots she needed. The ultrasound revealed that it's possible that Eli only has 1 artery and 1 vein in his umbilical cord - a condition known as Single Umbilical Artery (SUA). Most babies have 2 arteries and 1 vein. The vein carries the oxygen-rich blood to the organs. The arteries carry the deoxygentated blood away. The doctor said it could affect his kidneys but that usually there is nothing to worry about. Eli has both kidneys and is on schedule with his growth, all positive signs.

To find out more about SUA you can visit the March of Dimes website here or Wilikpedia at this link.

We have another ultrasound scheduled on Feb. 22 to verify if he actually has the condition and to check his growth. Hopefully he won't be so active this time and they can get a good look at everything they need to see. While this is a scary and uncertain time for us, we trust that God is in control. Your prayers are much appreciated.

Hello - I wanted to let you know that my baby boy was diagnose with SUA. They scheduled me for a echodiagram. I pray that everything works for us both.
